ToolsHovarn Chat
Messages for study groups and classes
Message another Hovarns user by their e-mail address, or make a group and share its invite link. Send photos and PDFs, write formulas like ½mv² or H₂SO₄, and see when your message was read.
What Chat does
Messages and groups, in the browser. Nothing to install.
Direct messages
Start a chat with anyone who has a Hovarns account by entering their e-mail address.
Groups by invite link
Create a group and share its invite link. You can turn the link off or make a new one at any time.
Photos and PDFs
Attach images and PDF files up to 5 MB. Only members of that chat can open them.
Unread counts and read receipts
See what is new, when your message was delivered and read, and when someone is typing.
Edit and delete
Fix a typo or remove a message you sent. Deleted messages show as deleted to everyone.
Maths and chemistry
Write formulas such as ½mv² or H₂SO₄ in LaTeX, and they are drawn properly in the thread.
Report and block
Block someone so they cannot message you, and report a message that breaks the rules.
What to know before you start
The limits, said plainly.
- Messages are stored on Hovarns servers. Chat is not end-to-end encrypted. Messages travel over HTTPS and are kept until you or the sender delete them, or the account is deleted.
- New messages arrive within a few seconds, not instantly. The page checks for new messages every few seconds while it is open, and less often when the tab is in the background.
- No voice or video calls in Chat. Use Hovarn Meet for calls.
- Under 18? A parent or guardian must agree. We ask for this when the account is created.
Your data
Hovarns stores your messages, attachments, the chats you are in, read times, blocks and reports. Typing indicators are not kept. You can export or delete everything from your Hovarns account.
